Meet Sonia

Sonia Warshawski (nee Grynstein) was born November 10, 1925, in Miezric, Poland. She was 13 when the war broke out, and just 15 when Nazis rounded up the Jews in the town, forcing them into the Miezric Ghetto. Sonia was Imprisoned at three of the most notorious death camps, Auschwitz, Majdanek, where she saw her mother being marched to the gas chamber, and Bergen-Belsen, where she was liberated by British troops at 19. She immigrated to the US in 1948, settling in Kansas City, KS.  Decades later Sonia found her true purpose in human connection. The venue: her tiny tailor shop, a vibrant and unlikely gem, tucked away in the basement of a dying shopping mall. She told her story of survival to anyone who would listen, her ever expanding clientele spanning all races, religions, and generations. Her public persona eventually grew into classrooms, churches, synagogues, packed theaters, museums, even beyond prison walls. Her survival was miraculous. But the Holocaust deeply damaged her body and soul. Through presentations, personal connections and the “Big Sonia” documentary, her joys and her immeasurable wounds are revealed. The film has inspired and educated audiences across the US and abroad and is regularly shown in schools, churches, museums, theaters, and a wide variety of venues.

The Blue Card is honored to continue sharing Sonia’s story through our program.

The Blue Card has seen the best results with students during two-hour-long sessions. We are happy to create longer sessions, or shorter sessions, and want to emphasize our commitment to curating the program that is right for you! Therefore, our recommendation is a minimum of two-hour sessions, but this is recommended – not required! We remain utterly flexible to every teacher/school/student’s needs.

  1. Introduction to the Holocaust, Sonia, and The Blue Card
  2. Students fill out brief “pre-viewing” survey to help us gain an understanding of their Holocaust knowledge before we begin our presentation
  3. Watch 45-minute “Big Sonia” documentary – introduces Sonia to the students; this helps them have a better idea of what kinds of questions they may want to ask her by providing background information on her Holocaust history and who she is as a person
  4. A moderator from The Blue Card will help facilitate a brief reflection on the film for the students
  5. Q&A with Sonia through the hologram
  6. Students then fill out a “post-viewing” survey that helps us determine what the students learn from our program and whether it was impactful

This program is not set in stone, and we are happy to change, add, or remove segments to accommodate the needs of our audience. Click on the Event Request Button on this page or email info@bluecardfund.org to learn more about our sessions and how we can accommodate your needs!
