David Mermelstein was born in Kevjazd, Czechoslovakia, on December 21, 1928, to Martin and Helen (Herskowitz) Mermelstein. He died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 92, on July 6, 2021. He is survived by his wife and love of 70 years, Irene (Markovic), daughter Helene (Joe) Davis, son Michael (Lisa) Mermelstein, daughter Debbi Mermelstein, grandchildren Jenna (Mike) Fox, Lindsay Davis, Brian Davis, and his great grandson, Eli Fox.
David was the only member of his family to have survived the Holocaust. He devoted his life to serving the South Florida Jewish Community, assuming leadership roles in many organizations, too numerous to name, some of which included the Holocaust Survivors of Miami-Dade, the Holocaust Survivors Foundation, U.S.A., Jewish Community Services, Jewish Family Services, the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center, The Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, as well as the Friends of the March of the Living and Greater Miami Jewish Federation. David was passionate about educating our children about the Holocaust. He regularly spoke to students at many elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as private schools throughout Miami-Dade County. He participated in special/mentor programs at Miami-Dade College and the University of Miami as well.
David was beloved by all who knew him, was an inspiration to all who heard his story, and will be greatly missed by all who love him. Donations in his memory may be made to the Israeli Defense Fund. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, 2021 at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapels at Mount Nebo Kendall (5900 SW 77th Avenue). Mount Nebo requires masks and social distancing.
